Jaree’s Story (Part 1 of 3):

Convened in their conference room, Jaree and his colleagues found a message awaiting them from Roberto Fyka. It stated that as the Solar Flare had destroyed the colony’s Hydrofier, as well as it’s interstellar ships and communication technologies, Robert had to evacuate whom he could. Following this, it stipulated that Jaree and his colleagues were to lead the colony until Benethir’s return.

Jaree’s blood boiled. He had worked tirelessly for Benethir over the past decades, becoming Sahara’s most senior manager in the process. Yet in spite of his sacrifices to Robert’s corporation, he was being lied to.

Reports were coming in from across Sahara. Evidence of direct tampering with the interstellar ships and communication technologies, gamma radiation localised to specific sites across Sahara, their water supply suspiciously critical, Robert’s story wasn’t holding up to scrutiny. The colony a mess from its inception, Jaree questioned why a tyrant like Robert would even bother save them. Given Benethir’s financial state, as well as Robert’s lies and the fact that they could be exposed upon the colony’s rescue, Jaree saw no reason for Benethir to rescue them. In fact, Jaree believed Robert wanted them gone.

His colleagues suggested they construct and use cryogenic hibernation pods, to wait until Benethir’s return. While this could save some of the colony, Benethir would have to leave Sol almost immediately for it to work. Even in a best-case scenario such as this, however, it wouldn’t matter to Jaree. To conserve water, colonists like him would be the first to have their pods turned off, as they didn’t have dependants. As a result, Jaree believed he would die, regardless of what would happen.
